10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Retire

A retirement date can feel like the finish line. In reality, it is the beginning of a different financial and personal phase of life. Before deciding you are ready, it helps to ask questions that go beyond the size of your retirement accounts.

1. What do I want my retirement years to look like?

Start with lifestyle, relationships, purpose, travel, housing, hobbies, and the way you expect to spend your time.

2. What does my current lifestyle actually cost?

Understanding today’s spending provides a more useful foundation for estimating tomorrow’s needs.

3. Which expenses are likely to change?

Some work-related expenses may decline while travel, healthcare, hobbies, or family support may increase.

4. What reliable income sources will I have?

Understand the role of Social Security, pensions, savings, retirement accounts, and other potential income.

5. How flexible is my spending?

Knowing what is essential versus discretionary can matter when circumstances change.

6. What large expenses might occur?

Home repairs, vehicles, family needs, and other major expenses can disrupt an otherwise reasonable plan.

7. How will I respond to uncertainty?

Inflation, market changes, longevity, and unexpected events make flexibility an important part of readiness.

8. Are my financial records and accounts organized?

Organization can make decisions easier for you and for anyone who may eventually need to help you.

9. Does my spouse or partner understand the plan?

Retirement works better when the people sharing the life also share an understanding of the priorities and decisions.

10. What questions am I still avoiding?

Uncertainty is useful information. It shows you where additional clarity may be valuable.
